World Music Day at the Scott County Public Library!

World Music Day with SCPL

With the world celebrating World Music Day on June 21st, people are encouraged to make music outside in their neighborhoods. It also gives us an opportunity to consider music from around the world. Part of loving music is exploring new sounds. Even if we don’t always understand the words, music can transcend these boundaries, appealing directly to our emotions. Explore the world – and enjoy music with the help from your free library services!

SCPL librarian, Julia, makes the following recommendations:

For the guitarists, check out Ali Farka Touré, whose low-pitched vocals and sparse accompaniment highlight this West African’s unique style.
Some his best works are his self-titled album, Ali Farka Touré, and his Grammy-winning collaboration with Ry Cooder in Talking Timbuktu.
Both albums can be found using Hoopla.

Ravi Shankar, well-known for his promotion of the sitar to Western audiences, is also well-represented within our digital collection.Try Three Ragas or India’s Master Musician. Here is the link to access his work on Hoopla:

Or, for some lovely singing, listen to Carminho, known for performing Fado, or Portuguese folk music. Browse Hoopla for her music:
