Emotions: Lessons from a Color Monster About Emotions

It’s September and school days are in full swing. This is your reminder that Caregivers should evaluate whether their child is equipped with the skills and coping mechanisms needed to regulate their emotions on their own in school. Children starting kindergarten must learn to adjust to a new school environment, new friends, new spaces, new tests, new skills, new challenges, and new emotions!

Children don’t learn to regulate their emotions by themselves: they rely on others, their trusted adults and family, to model behaviors; give them the words to name their emotions, show them ways to manage their emotions, and demonstrate how to recover or handle very strong emotions, as in cases of adversaries, testing stress, bullying, anger, or new experiences. The Color Monster books, among others, are great tools to help teach emotional mindfulness.

First, it is very important for children to be able to NAME their emotions. We need to learn the difference between being angry or hungry, disappointed or frustrated, sad or anxious.

Naming emotions with your children early on gives them the opportunity to observe how you handle your own emotions. Saying things like “Mommy is frustrated because we drove all the way to the pharmacy to get your prescription filled and they don’t have it in stock today...” or “ Daddy is mad because he just got a nail in the new tire and it’s flat now, so we can’t go out for pizza…” Helping children identify emotions and their role in daily life is the first step in learning to regulate them.

Second, children need to be able to say “NO.” Thirty years ago, many of us were trained to “share our toys” and “be nice” but with new research and understanding, it is okay to have your toddler say No, they don’t want to share, because that is where they are emotionally, and sharing might make them uncomfortable, frustrated or sad. Just as with hugging, it is okay for your child to say NO to a hug, and not be forced into one, against their emotions. Try having small children play next to each other instead! They can interact when they are ready.

Third, when dealing with emotions, it is important for children to know that no matter how they feel, they are loved unconditionally. Even if they throw a tantrum, hit you, or feel very angry, their emotions are not who they are…just a temporary state. Emotions are not a choice in young children. As their brains and vocabulary grow, they will be better able to identify, control, and regulate their emotions. Until then, we must remind ourselves and our children that they are worthy of love even if they are angry, grumpy, frustrated, or sad.

Listening to our bodies is another key skill that small children need to learn. Their body feelings need to be validated and should not be minimized. Listening to the body is how we learn to recognize how our bodies handle emotions and illness, from red cheeks, to upset tummies, to feeling anxious, or happy or joyful. Knowing how our bodies feel and putting the right word to these feelings takes time and encouragement from adults the children trust. Nurturing their vocabulary and feelings is key to developing good relationships with our emotions, and is key to learning the emotional regulation that is necessary for a successful school day.

Often termed ‘mindfulness’, emotional regulation is a skill, and you, as caregivers, are the best teachers!

Kindergarten Readiness and the Role of Public Libraries

Parents and caregivers do everything we can to prepare our little ones for kindergarten. We want them to start their educational journey with confidence, equipped with a full toolbox that will help them to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. It has been proven that children who enter kindergarten with a solid foundation of essential skills are more likely to excel academically, experience fewer behavioral issues, and develop positive attitudes toward learning. A child's educational journey hinges on their ability to decode words, comprehend stories, and express themselves through language. What is this Library Program?

The Scott County Public Library wants to get our community reading, and that means engaging even our youngest readers! We are excited to be offering this exciting ongoing and multi-year reading program for children ages 0-5 years.

This program was developed to increase awareness of the importance of early literacy as well as encouraging parents to embrace their role as their child’s first teacher.

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten (1,000 B4K) is a pre-literacy effort aimed at encouraging families to read at least 1000 books to their preschooler, birth to age 5, before they enter school.

1000 book reader The goal of this project is to help kids enter school ready to learn. Reading is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your child’s success when they begin school. It also provides an opportunity to increase their exposure to a wide variety of ideas and information, and to promote use of the library – your treasure trove of free reading material. As a parent, reading to our children also is essential to help them learn several important skills:

Print Motivation
Vocabulary
Print Awareness
Letter Knowledge
Phonological Awareness
Narrative Skills

These skills have been singled out by the American Libraries Association and other institutions the key pre-reading skills.

1000 book reader The beauty of this program is that you can read the same book 10 times, if that is what your child wants to hear. Repetition is great for your child to learn sequencing and narrative story order. Of course, we encourage all parents to keep reading to their child beyond the 1,000 books. Setting your own reading goals with your child is the first step in helping them become good readers.

Why 1,000 Books???

Author Mem Fox makes a profound statement in her book Reading Magic: why reading aloud to our children will change their lives forever:

“Reading aloud and talking about what we’re reading sharpens children’s brains. It helps develop their ability to concentrate at length, to solve problems logically, and to express themselves more easily and clearly. The stories they hear provide them with witty phrases, new sentences, and words of subtle meaning. Before long children begin to understand the look of the print and the way words work in sentences… No wonder experts tell us that children need to hear a thousand stories read aloud before they learn to read for themselves. A thousand! That sounds daunting. But when we do the sums, it isn’t as bad as we might think. Three stories a day will deliver us a thousand stories in one year alone, let alone in the four or five years prior to school. We can do it!” (pp.15-17)

How do I enroll my child and participate?

Please come to the Information Desk to sign up for the program and to obtain the first reading log. We furnish you with a log to keep track of what you have read to your child. Please be diligent in your records! Each child gets their own log.

Once you finish reading the first group of 100 books, come in with your completed log and get the next log for 100 books. Prizes will be given as each child reaches the 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1,000 book goals!

1000 books read before kindergarten certificate Come in each time you are ready for a new log. When you reach the 500 book halfway mark, we will give you a different insert with information on reading and child development.

When you have finished the reading log and reach your 1,000 books, make sure you come to the Information Desk so we can take your picture with your child & Completion Certificate! Your child will then pick up the final gift before becoming a book-and-library-loving Kindergartner!

What are some tips and tricks to get my kids “to read” with me?

Pick out books you enjoy and have fun reading together.
Use expression! Use different voices and accents for different characters in the story.
Get Silly. Kids love it when their parents break mold, sit on the floor and just get silly!
Find a time when you and your child are in a good mood to read. Reading together should never be a chore or a threat!

Books & Best Friends: Read to Therapy Dogs (Ages 4-12)

Come read to Therapy Dogs from Pawsibilities Unleashed every First & Third Saturdays of the month! Young readers are invited to "bone up" on their reading skills by reading to specially trained dogs. Just learned to read and want to show off? Read to the dogs! Struggling with reading and want to chill out with a friend- read to the dogs!

FREE. Parents, register your child in person -check in with Youth Staff. Come read with the Dogs today. They don't judge you, just love you! A tail-wagging good time! Use our books or bring a special one from home.

Pick Up Your Passport for a Chance to Win Summer Reading Prizes

Summer Reading 2024 is approaching, and we are getting ready for the best time of year! This year’s theme is Adventure Begins At Your Library. You will be keeping track of all the books you read with a passport, and each book will earn a stamp to show where you visited through reading. We encourage everyone to travel to far off lands, time travel to the past or future, explore other parts of the world and learn about their cultures. The youth raffle prizes this year are books, bikes and scooters to help you go places, learn, and explore. We have over 170 programs for all ages! Come and join us as we go on different adventures at the library!
