Adventure Begins at Your Library

Some people might not think that the words “LIBRARY” and “ADVENTURE” could possibly go together. But they are wrong!

Soon we will embark on a journey of fun and learning through our 2024 summer reading theme “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” Get ready to explore the world and beyond through books, programs, and displays that will bring the spirit of adventure to life.

Why have a summer reading program? Keeping young people reading and learning during their summer vacations is very important to prevent the loss of core reading and learning skills—sometimes called the “summer slide.” Typically, when children participate in summer reading programs, they are more motivated to read, and this leads to maintaining or improving the reading skills they mastered in school. But here at SCPL, our summer reading program is not just for students. It is for EVERYONE, and it can be your passport to fun!

As you read this newsletter you will see that library staff have planned many adventurous programs for people of all ages. Remember that all of these programs are free! OR—maybe you want to create your own adventures when you visit the library. Here are some possible ideas:
1. Look at microfilm of a newspaper from one hundred years ago.
2. Browse the travel section and check out a book about a place you want to visit.
3. Explore the cookbook area and choose a recipe to try.
4. Check out an Experience Kit or a Star Kit.
5. Find a book of poetry and read a poem out loud–then copy it into your journal.
6. Choose a random CD and listen to it all the way through.
7. Visit the Kentucky Room to see what books are on the shelves.
8. Check out magazines or download magazines through the library’s Libby app.

Free adventures await you here at the library! We wish you a fun-filled, “adventurous” summer and we encourage you to visit the library often!
